FIRE DRILL

Short, 20′, 2024

LOGLINE

A young Ukrainian fulfils his dream to work aboard a container ship, but the sudden escalation of war overshadows his passage into adulthood.

DIRECTORS NOTE

After leaving my first job as a shipping operator to pursue a career in filmmaking, I aspired to create a film about the experiences of seafarers. It became clear to me that despite the crucial role shipping plays in the international supply chain, there is often limited knowledge about the individuals employed at sea.
During development, I spent several months travelling on various container ships, immersing myself in the daily routines and conducting interviews with crew members, who were predominantly from Eastern Europe and Asia. During one of these voyages, the Russian invasion of Ukraine occurred, and I found myself among sailors who were directly impacted by the conflict. This experience resonated deeply with me. To ensure the authenticity of these stories, we worked with an ensemble of real sailors and an actor.
Fire Drill is a fictionalized account of the events and stories I experienced. The film aims to explore the challenges, connections, and resilience of being on a container ship through the eyes of a young Ukrainian man as he embarks on his maiden voyage amidst the escalation of a war at home.
